On 29th February 2024 we held our first film night fundraiser at the Beacon School. We screened the highly acclaimed film, ‘The Old Oak’ by veteran director Ken Loach. The film tells the story of Syrian refugees arriving in an ex-mining village in the north-east of England to mixed reception and some hostility. However, the story concludes with both communities managing to find an understanding and develop a friendship.

We were fortunate that Narjes who is a Syrian refugee recently arrived in the area with her family, made some delicious pastries which everyone enjoyed together with soft drinks and wine.

We were delighted to have a full house of over 70 attendees and the evening raised in excess of £1,100. We are looking forward to hosting another film night in the Autumn.

 Some feedback from the evening

“ Great movie- very thought provoking and moving”

“ Very good film and a well organised night”

“ The film needs to be shown in all sixth forms”

Thank you to the Beacon School for the use of the facilities and to all our supporters for making the evening a success.
