On a gloriously sunny summer day, Chiltern Welcomes joined a wide range of local community groups and businesses at Peace in the Park in Chesham, Buckinghamshire. A festive atmosphere filled the air with the smell of food and the sound of children’s laughter as they enjoyed rides and bouncy castles. At the Chiltern Welcomes stand, trustees and volunteers were joined by Syrian and Ukrainian families who were selling traditional savoury and sweet foods from their countries, helping to raise money for both the families and the charity. Queues of locals had the chance to try delicacies such as Ukrainian honey cake, Syrian spinach and potato pastries and sweet Zimbabwean puffs.
Just behind our stand, kites were flying high as part of ‘Patungs for Peace’, organised and run by CW volunteer Javad who had recruited local master kite flyers to help the children fly their beautifully decorated paper kites. Tributes to refugees, the kites displayed words such as ‘Love’, ‘Refuge’, ‘Friend’ and ‘Harmony’ as they flew high in the blue skies over Lowndes Park.
A fabulous day was enjoyed by all those who took part and much needed funds were raised; we hope to make this a regular event for Chiltern Welcomes. Thank you to all who volunteered their time, came to join the activities, bought food and supported us. Special thanks to Parvez and the Peace in the Park team for their fantastic organisation and the support they provided prior to the event and on the day.
